Frequently Asked Questions

Why consider a birth doula?

Numerous studies have documented the benefits of having a doula present during labor. A recent Cochrane Review, Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth, showed a very high number of positive birth outcomes when a doula was present.

When continuous labor support was provided by a doula, women experienced a:

31% decrease in the use of Pitocin
28% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
9% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience

What if I have a C-Section?

I will be there to support you in the event of a scheduled or unplanned Caesarean birth. My role as your doula in this situation may involve:

  • Assisting you and your partner in gathering pertinent information from the medical providers regarding the recommendation for a C-Section

  • Remaining by your side in the event your partner goes with your baby for any exams

  • Providing postpartum support with breastfeeding/bonding

But I think I will still want an epidural?

You will still benefit from a doula whether or not pain medications are utilized. As your doula, I will be there to help you make informed decisions regarding pain management options and I will also provide comfort measures during early labor before an epidural is administered.

What about my partner?
A doula's presence can strengthen their role and confidence by providing education and encouragement—before and during labor. Doulas allow the partner to take a step back to rest and refuel without and guilt attached. Having an extra pair of hands makes a difference to a mother’s comfort and pain levels. A doula can provide reassurance, affirmation, and clarity for both partners. Above all, she can guide the partner to give more support to the mother.

How can I make the cost more affordable?

If a family would like to arrange a payment plan, that can be discussed in greater detail via a consultation. Many people have started to include doula services on their baby shower registries which allow family and friends to place money towards the fee and greatly reduce, if not eliminate your out-of-pocket cost.

When should I hire my doula?

The earlier we begin to form our relationship the better! The best way to know if I am fit for you is through my free consultations. I will be able to answer your questions and we will get to know each other to see if we make a perfect fit. Monthly check-ins will follow after the completion of the contract. We will have two in-person meetings during your pregnancy.

What setting do you support clients in?

I am available for hospital, home, and birth center births. I also support c-section clients, whether planned or emergency.

How many clients do you take a month? And what if you're unavailable when I go into labor?

To ensure I can best provide quality care, I accept 1-2 doula clients a month. If I am not able to attend your birth due to an emergency, I have a team of back-up doulas who will serve in my place. I will allow families to meet and engage with my backup via phone call or video conference one month before the due date.
